Entries are in, the judging concluded and winners set to be announced for the World's Original Marmalade Awards at Dalemain Mansion on Saturday 19th March, launching the 2016 festival across three locations.
Almost 3000 jars of competition marmalade have come by plane, sea, land, and even an Aston Martin. Once again the standard of the Artisan, B&B and Homemade entries has continued to rise, as the Awards heads into its 11th consecutive year.
Each jar entered tells a story about the marmalade maker and the journey their marmalade has made. Each receives a mark card with judge’s comments, certificate and thank you letter.
Organiser Jane Hasell-McCosh said: "We have nearly 3000 marmalades looking pristine and glorious, all ready for their big weekend. The labels and flavours have been more inventive than ever, and we can’t wait to show them to the public.”
Martin Grant, MD of Mackays, a key sponsor of the festival, said: “Once again these awards have shown just how passionate the world is about marmalade. This doesn’t surprise me, however. We export our Dundee Marmalade to 80 countries across the globe, including Japan, Sweden and Australia. There is a definite appetite for this versatile, tangy preserve and the entries received from around the globe reflects this.”
The World’s Original Marmalade Festival, which will be taking place at the later dates of 19th & 20th March, is expanding. For the first time, this year the festival will take place across three locations, with Penrith town centre going Orange, and Rheged centre hosting a range of activities. The festival will include workshops on marmalade; an Ivan Day lecture; chefs demonstrations; artisan food markets and readings of Paddington Bear with lots of children's activities. A particular highlight is that our patron, Paddington Bear – the movie star - will be taking time out of his busy schedule to attend the Festival!
The award winners will be announced at 10.30 am on Saturday 19th March with great fanfare at Dalemain, and the Marmalade awarded Double Gold will be offered the unrivalled opportunity to sell their marmalade at Fortnum & Mason. Sponsors Pattesons Glass will be on site to provide excellent deals for all the producer’s jar needs, and well over 500 Artisan marmalades will be available to taste and buy, with jars displayed from the Festival weekend until 5th April. National Marmalade Week, to celebrate marmalade heritage, is taking place 28th February – 7th March, launched with A Marmalade Run on the Dalemain Estate and a “Peel” of Bells. As well as sharing images and stories, the Marmalade Awards will be featuring food writers and chefs with a passion for marmalade including a famous Hot Marmalade Pudding recipe from the michelin star restaurant Three Chimneys in Scotland. Local butchers Cranston’s have created a delicious marmalade sausage using Jane Hasell-McCosh’s own marmalade, to mark the occasion, and family marmalade makers and sponsors Mackays will be encouraging food bloggers and writers to share their favourite marmalade recipes.
